Which version of RuneScape is this?
New School 99 is based on RuneScape build 727. Its game content dates from July 2012: it includes Carnillean Rising, released on 3 July 2012, but not Some Like It Cold, released on 7 August 2012.
That's about four months before the Evolution of Combat update in November 2012, so this is the pre-EoC game. The world, skills and quests are the mid-2012 ones. New School 99 adds its own changes on top, like WASD movement and free combat.
If you're coming from Old School RuneScape, which is based on 2007, expect five more years of updates, along with a few things that were changed or taken out in that time.
Quests you might expect but won't find
Changed or removed before 2012
These were quests in the early game, but by 2012 they were gone or no longer counted as quests.
| Quest | What happened |
|---|---|
| Romeo & Juliet | Removed from the game on 21 September 2010 and replaced by Gunnar's Ground. |
| Sheep Shearer | Turned into a miniquest on 24 June 2010, so it doesn't give a quest point. |
| Witch's Potion | Turned into a miniquest on 24 June 2010, so it doesn't give a quest point. |
Released after July 2012
Quests released after the game's content was taken aren't in New School 99, including:
- Some Like It Cold (August 2012)
- Diamond in the Rough and Stolen Hearts (September 2012)
- What's Mine is Yours (October 2012)
- Rune Memories (November 2012)
- The Brink of Extinction (December 2012)
- The World Wakes (March 2013)
- Bringing Home the Bacon, The Death of Chivalry, Birthright of the Dwarves and Missing, Presumed Death (2013)
- Every quest after those

Which wiki to use for help
There's no wiki for RuneScape as it was in 2012, so you'll need a mix of the RuneScape Wiki, which covers today's RuneScape, and the Old School RuneScape Wiki, which covers the game that grew from a 2007 backup.
- Combat, weapon speeds and specials, controls
- Use New School 99's guides. Free combat, dodge rolls and lock-on are New School 99's own, so neither wiki covers them.
- Anything added between 2007 and mid-2012, like Summoning, Dungeoneering, Nex and the Ancient Curses
- Use the RuneScape Wiki. Old School RuneScape doesn't have it.
- Quests
- Use the RuneScape Wiki, but check the quest's update history. Some quests were changed or remade after July 2012, like Rune Mysteries (November 2012) and Demon Slayer (January 2013), and the wiki describes the latest version.
- Item stats
- Use an old revision on the RuneScape Wiki (see below), or the Old School RuneScape Wiki for items from before 2007. Today's RuneScape Wiki shows the stats from after the Evolution of Combat. 2012 items used the same kind of attack and defence bonuses as Old School, though some numbers changed between 2007 and 2012.
- Prices
- Neither. New School 99 has its own economy, so prices on both wikis are from the real games.
Be careful with Old School RuneScape content that was never in RuneScape, like Zulrah, the Chambers of Xeric, Fossil Island and Dragon Slayer II. None of it is in New School 99.
Seeing a RuneScape Wiki page as it was in 2012
Open the page's View history and pick a revision from around July 2012. For example, here's the Abyssal whip on 28 July 2012. Old revisions are shown with today's templates, so some boxes may look odd, but the text is from the time.
